Pink Cherry Blossom
My cycle route in takes me over some busy roads and then through two semi-wild parks leading down to the River Thames.
Last year, in April, I cycled under a tree with beautiful pale pink blossoms on the bare branches. As the flowers emerged, the copper coloured leaves slowly followed, hiding the dying blossom. As Summer turned to Autumn, those flowers turned into dark red cherries and the tree was full of birds feeding on them ! As the road was so busy, I could only take quick photos underneath the tree to record the life cycle of that cherry blossom tree.
This is one of the famous Japanese decorative cherry blossom trees called Sakura. It is the symbol of renewal. Each year, the people of Japan celebrate life and the seasons in the festival of Hanami.
I painted The Pink Cherry Blossom during the spring and summer of 2025, using Japanese Moon Palace paper made from Mulberry leaves and cotton. I use traditional black Sumi and coloured mineral inks with brushes from China and Japan made from bamboo and hair. The painting has been float mounted and framed in natural Ash.
