Wild Blue Chicory In Flower

This study was one of a number of paintings and studies that I produced in preparation for painting a commission. Chicory has dark blueish-green leaves with startling blue or mauve flowers. The plant can grow up to 6 foot with flowers growing on the bare branches, at the end of a stem but also where branches meet.

It is an extraordinary plant to find in an English field. The petals are so sculptured and glossy, lasting for just one day, whilst the stems are so shaggy and unkempt! Myths and legends about the beautiful Wild Chicory flower are abundant, but perhaps most seem to dwell on lost or unrequited love.

What is fact is that the root of the wild Chicory is ground and used as a coffee substitute.
I created this painting during one winter in lockdown, using Japanese Washi paper made from Mulberry leaves and cotton. I use tradtional black Sumi and coloured mineral inks with brushes from China and Japan made from bamboo and hair. The painting has been float mounted and framed in natural Ash.
