This painting celebrates spring and with it the mass of pink cherry blossom that appears on the bare boughed trees on my cycle ride to Thames-side Studios from March to May.

Friendship Plant

I have three Friendship plants – more. correctly known as Pilea Involucrata – and a number of small ones that develop over the summer period.  Originally these were presented to a family member who had been a missionary, and brought them back from China.   A gift of a Friendship plant was a gift of love and luck.

I painted this Friendship Plant on Japanese Washi paper made from Mulberry leaves. I use traditional black Sumi and coloured mineral inks, with brushes from China and Japan made from bamboo and hair. The painting has been float mounted but not framed.
