The Pink Helleborus

The name Helliborus has been in use since the days of the Romans, but over the centuries this plant has acquired many other names, including Christmas Rose, Oracle Flower, and Sneezewort.

The name Sneezwort comes from fact that this plant is very toxic and any part of the plant can be ground to a fine powder that will induce a fit of sneezing! This was thought to eject evil spirits and diseases. So the powder from Helliborus was frequently used in the manufacture of snuff!

One of the more interesting Helliborus myths, recorded by a 20th century herbalist, reports that walking on a scattering of ground helliborus could make you invisible!

I created this painting during the spring of 2026, using Japanese double Xuan paper made from bark. I use tradtional black Sumi and coloured mineral inks with brushes from China and Japan made from bamboo and hair. The painting has been float mounted and framed in natural Ash.
