Bindweed, Clover & Corn

My cycle ride home from Thames-side Studios takes me thorugh Maryon Wilson Park – once the formal garden of a grand house but now a horticulturnal adventure of bindweed and brambles mixed with the rare and exotic plants such as a Tulip Tree!. This painting is my dedication to the humble weeds of England.

Bindweed – also known as Convolvulus – is known for its habit of spreading and ability to grow even in harshest conditions. Unsurprisingly, the spiritual associations and symbolism are those of determination and resiilance!

I painted Bindweed, Clover & Corn in the late summer of 2024 using Japanese Moon Palace paper paper made from rag and Mulberry leaves. I use tradtional black Sumi and coloured mineral inks with brushes from China and Japan made from bamboo and hair. The painting has been float mounted and framed in natural Ash.
